Call about man sitting on porch with gun leads to Thanksgiving police shooting in SC

A man who was reportedly sitting on his porch with a gun on Thanksgiving was wounded by gunfire from police in Rock Hill, S.C.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division reported Friday morning that it is investigating the shooting, which happened in the 500 block of Hutchinson Street. The victim, whose name has not been released, was described as a 30-year-old white male, media outlets report.

A neighbor told police the man was standing on his porch with a gun at 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving, reported the (Rock Hill) Herald. Upon arrival, police said they tried to talk the man into putting the gun down, but he pointed his gun at police and fled back into the house, media outlets report. At that point, the encounter turned “into an armed and barricaded incident,” reported The Herald.

The man reportedly had a “mental health pick up order” issued for him, reported the Observer’s news partner WBTV.

SWAT negotiators made numerous attempts to get the subject to come out without any weapons. He refused to cooperate, media outlets report. SWAT members then entered the home and tried to take the man’s gun. Two SWAT officers fired their weapons and hit the subject, reported TV station WCNC.

Rock Hill police spokesperson Capt. Mark Bollinger told The Herald the man is in stable condition and expected to fully recover. He was then flown to Carolinas Medical Center where he was undergoing treatment. Bollinger told the Herald investigators were working on potential criminal charges against the man.

No other injuries were reported. Both officers, a white male and an African-American male, have been placed on administrative duty, officials said.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division said Friday that it was unclear if there was police video of the shooting.

There have been 43 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina in 2017. In 2016, there were 41 such shootings, reports SLED, one of which was in Rock Hill.
