Two people fell about 40 feet while working at a construction site in southwest Charlotte Sunday afternoon, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

One of the workers was killed, and the other is in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center, WBTV said.

Choate Construction is building a Staples office supply store at the site, on the 3700 block of Westinghouse Boulevard, local TV news reporters said.

Local news station NBC Charlotte reported that several Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police cars responded to the scene, along with a fire truck.

Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating, WBTV reported.
