A high school student in Lenoir died Tuesday after a log crashed into the windshield of the truck he was in.

The crash happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. near Hibriten High School, where the teen was a sophomore, according to WSOC-TV.

A logging truck was making a right turn onto a road as a Ford F-150 was about to go through the intersection. The F-150 collided with a log that extended from the back of the logging truck, according to Lenoir police.

The log went through the windshield and killed 15-year-old Wesley Oliver, police said. The driver of the F-150 was identified as 50-year-old Brian Oliver. Police did not comment on his condition.

Grief counselors were at Hibriten High School to provide support for students after the crash, according to the Lenoir News-Topic newspaper.

A Caldwell County Schools spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

It was the third student death for Hibriten High School in five years, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

“Hibriten has always had a reputation for being a tight knit family,” the school said in a statement, according to the station. “We will get through this together. We are family.”
