An 8-year-old Salisbury boy was left with severe second-degree burns Wednesday after trying to recreate a YouTube video of a fire flash, according to media outlets.

The video reportedly shows how to use a lighter with a bottle of perfume to create a quick flash fire.

Salisbury Police spokeswoman Shelia Lingle told the Salisbury Post it happened Wednesday morning, when a group of young children at a Second Street home tried to recreate the experiment.

If done properly, the ignited spray of perfume was supposed to “flash.” However, the experiment went horribly wrong when the perfume got on a boy’s clothes, causing them to ignite, according to the Observer’s news partner WBTV. The station reports three children were involved in the experiment.

The victim had burns on his arms, neck and face, police told WBTV. An adult in the home heard the child screaming and was able to extinguish the fire, media outlets report. The child was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Brenner Children’s Hospital, it was reported.

Charlotte TV station WCNC identified the victim as 8-year-old Rondarius Barndhart and reported a family member was in the home and he was rushed to the hospital.

Salisbury Police and the Department of Social Services are looking into the incident, said the Salisbury Post.

There are multiple videos on YouTube demonstrating how to create a fire ball and flame thrower with perfume, cologne and other products. Some use children to demonstrate various methods. The videos have thousands of views.
