Volunteers at Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Mooresville bagged and distributed about 40,000 pounds of potatoes to soup kitchens, shelters and other organizations on Sunday. Hundreds of volunteers gathered at the Mooresville Christian Mission to sort and bag the potatoes, donated by distributors in eastern North Carolina, and put them into 10-pound bags that were handed out to charities from a nine-county area. The potato drop was a mission project of the church and was coordinated by the gleaning network of Society of St. Andrew, which salvages crops that might otherwise rot in the fields and distributes them to organizations that help the needy.
