Duke Energy said Thursday it will dig up coal ash at its Robinson power plant in Hartsville, S.C., and rebury it in a lined landfill on the site.

The power plant’s coal unit was retired in 2012, leaving 4.2 million tons of ash. Duke said landfilling the ash is “the most reasonable and prudent way” to protect groundwater and the public.

Duke announced Wednesday that it will build ash landfills at two North Carolina power plants, Dan River in Eden and Sutton in Wilmington.

Duke signed an agreement with South Carolina regulators last September to also excavate ash at its second coal plant in the state, W.S. Lee. That plant shut down in October.

About 1.3 million tons of Lee’s ash will be hauled to a landfill in Georgia, Duke reported in February.
