Federal agents seized two handguns from passengers’ carry-on bags at Charlotte Douglas International Airport last weekend.

Agents confiscated a loaded .40-caliber handgun on April 24 and a loaded .380-caliber handgun on April 25, according to the Transportation Security Administration’s weekly blog Friday night.

The weapons were among 44 loaded and five unloaded guns that agents seized from passengers’ carry-on bags at U.S. airports over the past week, according to the TSA.

Passengers can travel with firearms in checked baggage, but they must first be declared to the airline.

A passenger with a firearm in a carry-on bag can face a penalty as high as $11,000. The TSA’s blog didn’t say whether the Charlotte passengers were fined.

At the airport Wednesday, officials displayed dozens of knives, guns, tools, corkscrews and other items not permitted in carry-on bags that were recently seized from airport travelers.

The TSA and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department participated in the joint news conference with airport officials.
