Nearly $230,000 embezzled at Salvation Army’s Carolinas headquarters in Charlotte

The Salvation Army’s divisional headquarters for the Carolinas has accused one of its employees of embezzling nearly $230,000.

Salvation Army officials filed a police report Friday, stating that money was taken by an employee at the Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters of North and South Carolina, which is based in Charlotte on Archdale Drive.

Agency officials released a statement Tuesday, noting that the police investigation does not involve staff at the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte, which operates Charlotte’s largest shelter for women and children, a group of thrift stores and the Boys & Girls Clubs in the city. The theft is not expected to impact those services in Charlotte or the rest of the Carolinas because the nonprofit is insured, officials said.

According to a police report, the employee took $229,853 over a period of two years, reported the Observer’s news partner WBTV. The suspect's name was not released.

“The Salvation Army does not tolerate financial misconduct or improprieties among its officers, employees, or volunteers,” according to a statement from the nonprofit. “All Salvation Army units, including the Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters, undergo regular audits for the purpose of maintaining financial accountability. Such audits allow The Salvation Army to uncover cases of financial wrongdoing so that appropriate measures can be taken.”

The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters Charlotte is the central administrative office that provides support and service to 60 Salvation Army locations in the Carolinas, including the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte.
