Warm day ahead; thunderstorms possible Monday afternoon

Thunderstorms are possible in the Charlotte area Monday afternoon after what is expected to be one of the warmest days of the year so far.

Temperatures are expected to reach near 90 degrees in the afternoon, followed by a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The normal high temperature for this time of year is 78.

The scattered thunderstorms should taper off before 11 p.m. The weather service cautioned that the storms could become severe and bring hail or heavy rain.
