Union County looking to hire lobbyist
Union County is looking to get back in the lobbying business.
The county said it is considering hiring a lobbyist to work in Raleigh as it focuses on issues that could impact it, including public utility and tax concerns.
The move is part of the county’s goal to improve intergovernmental relationships and develop a comprehensive legislative strategy, said Michelle Lancaster, Union County’s assistant county manager
A number of other cities and counties also use registered lobbyists, including Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Gaston County and Salisbury.
Commissioners said they need better communication with the county’s legislative delegation in Raleigh.
Union County staffers are monitoring nearly two dozen bills that could impact the county.
“It’s a practical matter to have someone there (in Raleigh) every day who will be your eyes and ears,” Lancaster said.
Lancaster will be Union County’s liaison with the lobbyist, and hopes to have a plan for county commissioners to consider in June. The costs are still being worked out, but the county expects it will be less than $100,000.
Union County previously used a lobbyist for several months in 2010 for legislation dealing with public works, Lancaster said.
