Multiple small explosions were reported in a fire that collapsed a building in northwest Charlotte Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

The metal building was vacant and had been used as a paint shop, Charlotte Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Ramsey said at the scene.

The building was in the 500 block of Valleydale Road, off Fred D. Alexander Boulevard. It was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived, Ramsey said.

No one was injured, and 23 firefighters controlled the blaze in 16 minutes, Charlotte fire Capt. Jackie Gilmore said.

The fire started shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg arson investigators started digging through debris about 9 a.m. to search for clues as to what started the fire, the Charlotte Fire Department said on Twitter.
