Two loaded handguns seized from carry-ons at CLT

Federal agents seized two loaded .380-caliber handguns from carry-on bags at Charlotte Douglas International Airport this week.

One of the guns was seized on Sunday and the other on Wednesday, according to the Transportation Security Administration’s weekly blog published Friday night.

The weapons were among 49 loaded and eight unloaded guns seized at U.S. airports this week.

Among the more unusual weapons seized were a key chain stun gun at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, a belt buckle knife at Oakland International Airport and two smoke grenades at Tucson International Airport.

Passengers can face a fine of up to $11,000 for having a prohibited weapon in their carry-ons, the TSA said.

Firearms are permitted in checked baggage, but they must first be declared to the airline.

“Unfortunately, these sorts of occurrences are all too frequent, which is why we talk about these finds,” the TSA said. “Sure, it’s great to share the things that our officers are finding, but at the same time, each time we find a dangerous item, the line is slowed down and a passenger that likely had no ill intent ends up with a citation or in some cases is even arrested.”

The TSA did not say whether the Charlotte Douglas passengers were arrested or fined.
