When 18-year-old Terale Claridy-Vaught was shot and killed in a Steele Creek street Sunday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were already nearby.
Officers responded to a report of gunshots fired at a home around 10:30 p.m. in the 14400 block of Carolina Forest Court, police said. While they were investigating, they heard more shots.
Claridy-Vaught had been shot a block away. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
CMPD's SWAT team responded to help search for the shooter, police said.
Residents were asked to stay inside their homes overnight, according to the Observer's news partner WBTV.
Hours later, police had not announced an arrest but said residents were not in danger, WBTV reported, because investigators believe the shooter fled the scene in a vehicle.
