After controversial tweets, city council's LaWana Mayfield to host forum on police relations

Charlotte City Council member LaWana Mayfield, who's sparked controversy over recent statements about the city's police officers, will host a forum Friday night on improving community-police relations.

Mayfield, who represents west Charlotte's District 3, stirred a backlash with a March 26 tweet: "“Being Black in America under #45 (Donald Trump) has created homegrown terrorist wearing blue uniforms.”

In a follow-up tweet last month, she alluded to police "corruption."

"I have and continue to be one of the strongest supporters of law enforcement," she wrote, "but I will NOT turn a blind eye to corruption, assaults, and the killings of unarmed black & brown people. If you are offended by my comments and not the situation YOU need to re-evaluate."

In April Mayfield, in another social media post, appeared to question whether the 9-11 terrorist attack on New York in 2001 actually occurred. She later apologized for the "hurt and pain" her comments may have caused.

“Racial Reconciliation through Truth & Healing: Police Relationships in Communities of Color” will start at 6 p.m. Friday at St. Luke's Missionary Baptist Church at 1600 Norris Ave.
