Pedestrian fatally struck in southeast Charlotte at 2:45 a.m.
A person was hit and killed on a road in southeast Charlotte early Friday morning.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, a pedestrian was fatally struck around 2:45 a.m. in the 8400 block of Monroe Road. Police say officers were nearby when the wreck occurred and were able to stop the driver who reportedly tried to leave the scene.
The driver was taken into custody, police say.
The incident has shut down Monroe Road between Timber Springs Drive and Covedale Drive.
Police say the road is expected to be closed for two hours. Drivers can use Independence Boulevard as an alternate route, officers say.
The victim's name was not released.
