Volunteer firefighter rushed to respond to a call in Rowan County. He never made it.
A firefighter was killed and two others were injured in a crash in eastern Rowan County Wednesday afternoon.
Officials identified the firefighter as Michael Goodnight, 55, a member of the Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. on Gold Knobb Road.
Highway Patrol says Goodnight was in a pickup truck and responding to an accident call when he crashed into a Ford Mustang.
The driver of the Mustang was apparently turning left into a driveway when the truck crossed the double-yellow lines in an attempt to pass.
Troopers say that's when the pick-up truck hit the Mustang.
Goodnight was pronounced dead at the scene, and two women in the Mustang were airlifted to the hospital in unknown condition.
The women were apparently headed to a family Fourth of July cookout. Their names have not been released.
