Arizona police say a report on the arrest of Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim was inaccurate in saying he misidentified himself as a team security official after being stopped for suspicion of DUI on July 4th, reports NBC Sports
Police originally said Keim identified himself as “director of security for the Arizona Cardinals,” but NBC Sports says a review of footage taken at the scene contradicts that assertion.
The footage shows Keim mentioned the name of the team’s director of security but did not claim to be that person, reports the Arizona Republic. The Chandler Police Department says it will be correcting the report to reflect that, the newspaper reported.
Keim was pulled over shortly after midnight on July 4th and arrested after an officer allegedly saw his pickup drifting between traffic lanes and nearly hit a curb while traveling through the Phoenix suburb of Chandler, the Associated Press reported earlier this week.
He refused to take a preliminary breath test, or submit to several steps of field sobriety testing, saying he had a pre-existing knee injury, according to a police report. Keim smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and he swayed at some points while talking to the officer, the report says.
Keim told the officer he had consumed two beers, one to two hours prior to being stopped and he denied using medication or drugs, the report says.
Two sets of handcuffs had to be used, due to the width of Keim’s shoulders, the report says.
Sports Illustrated is reporting Keim was convicted of DUI in 1996.
The Associated Press reports Keim has apologized for showing “incredibly poor judgment and inexcusable actions” during the incident.
Keim, a Pennsylvania native, was named Cardinals general manager in 2013. He is known in the Carolinas for being a star offensive lineman at N.C. State in the early 1990s, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
In a 2016 profile of Keim, the News & Observer noted he attended NC State on a scholarship and helped lead the Wolfpack to a 9-3 season in 1994.
Sports Illustrated says Keim’s contract with the Cardinals was recently extended through 2022.
