A 58-year-old man was killed Monday night after he was hit by a car while trying to cross a street in east Charlotte.

The collision happened just before 10 p.m. on The Plaza, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The victim, Barry Otis Mahoney, was attempting to cross in the 4400 block of the road near Eastway Drive. He was in the road’s median when he walked in the path of a 2008 Honda Accord, officials said.

Mahoney wasn’t in a crosswalk, and there wasn’t a marked crosswalk in the roadway, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene to aid Mahoney, officials said. He was arrested for driving with a revoked license and for not having liability insurance, police said.

Speed and impairment weren’t factors in the crash.
