Students fall ill at Union County elementary school
Twenty to 30 students at Shiloh Elementary School in Union County experienced gastrointestinal problems Thursday and Friday, including diarrhea and vomiting, Union County Schools spokeswoman Tahira Stalberte said.
What caused the illnesses wasn’t known Friday, Stalberte said. School officials notified the county health department, which will try to determine the cause, she said. County Public Health Director Phillip Tarte couldn’t be reached Friday.
Parents of the sickened children were called to pick them up and take them to the doctor, Stalberte said.
“Some of it started yesterday, and it lingered on into today,” Stalberte said of the illnesses.
After classes ended Friday, a “thorough cleaning” of the school was planned, she said.
The school, on Rogers Road in Monroe, has about 560 students.
End-of-grade tests scheduled for Friday were postponed until Tuesday, Stalberte said.
