Dave Lyle Boulevard, I-77 interchange under construction

Construction crews are working night shifts on Dave Lyle Boulevard in Rock Hill to improve traffic flow coming off Interstate 77.

With the $1.5 million project, the state Department of Transportation is primarily aiming to help drivers make easier and safer left turns from Dave Lyle Boulevard onto Chamberside Drive after leaving the I-77 southbound exit ramp. Currently, drivers making that turn must quickly merge across three lanes of traffic.

The project will add a second left turn lane at the intersection of westbound Dave Lyle Boulevard and Chamberside Drive.

As drivers exit the interstate, a right turn onto Dave Lyle Boulevard will be assisted by a traffic signal. From there, drivers can join one of two dedicated left turn lanes to enter Chamberside Drive and the nearby shopping center.

The current “free-flow” lane on westbound Dave Lyle Boulevard, which allows right turns into the Manchester Village shopping center, will remain.

Crews also are adding turn lanes on the interstate exit and entrance ramps.

SCDOT officials say the improvements will reduce traffic delays and make the area safer for drivers.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by July 31. Crews will be working at night – from about 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Sundays through Thursdays. Drivers should be on the lookout for lane restrictions during those hours..

Once the new lanes are in place, DOT workers will install overhead signs to direct drivers.
