Man killed while trying to cross train tracks in Gastonia, officials say

A man was killed Wednesday morning after he was struck by a train in Gastonia.

Officers were called to Hancock Street and East Airline Avenue shortly after 9 a.m., where witnesses said a man tried crossing train tracks.

The man, 57-year-old Morgan Ray London, was trying to cross the tracks in an attempt to beat an oncoming train, witnesses told police.

The railroad arms were down at the time London attempted to cross, witnesses said.

London was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center, according to Gastonia police. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
