A high school cross-country runner collapsed while running in a meet at McAlpine Park in Charlotte on Saturday, and she died early Sunday morning, according to her high school band’s Facebook page.
Samantha Davis was a senior at Union Pines High School in Cameron, which is about two hours east of Charlotte. She was running in the Hare and Hounds XC Invitational meet, which has welcomed teams from several states, according to the running website MileSplit North Carolina.
Davis had a seizure at around the 4-kilometer mark in the race, the running website said, and went into cardiac arrest. She was taken to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center but did not survive, according to The Pilot, a newspaper in Southern Pines.
The Pilot reported that in 2016, Davis’ mother told the newspaper that Davis started having seizures in connection with a softball injury and was diagnosed with epilepsy.

Davis also ran track and participated in the marching band at Union Pines, according to MileSplit North Carolina.
A GoFundMe page raising money for Davis’ parents had received nearly $5,000 by early Sunday afternoon. Many donors noted their connections to cross country teams around the state or said they knew someone who ran at McAlpine on Saturday.
