An umbrella and heavy coat will be your best friends in Charlotte this week

Brace for a wet, cold week in Charlotte.

Temperatures are expected to reach only the mid-40s Monday through Thursday, 20 degrees colder than the normal high of 64 degrees. The exception should be Tuesday, when the high will creep into the 50s.

Up to an inch of rain is expected Monday, the National Weather Service says, with heavy rainfall totaling up to 2 more inches possible overnight.

An 80 percent chance of rain continues Tuesday. Rain is less likely Wednesday but increases again to an 80 percent chance on Thursday.

In all, the weather service expects Charlotte to get more than 4 inches of rain this week. Similar amounts are expected across the western Carolinas, continuing what has been an unusually wet year. Charlotte’s total rainfall for the year to date is 11 inches above normal.

Friday is expected to bring relief that lasts through the weekend, with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-50s.
