A 20-year-old man died after the speeding car in which he was a passenger veered off East Mallard Creek Church Road early Tuesday, struck a tree and rolled down an embankment, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Devin Dejohn Johnson was the front-seat passenger in a 2007 Toyota Camry Solara whose driver lost control of the car, causing it to slide sideways before it ran off the right side of the road, became airborne and hit the tree, police said. Medic pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

The driver, Milan Jerard Shannon, 21, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle and reckless driving, police Detective Andrew J. Oberer said.

Shannon was in the Mecklenburg County jail Tuesday on $10,100 bail.

He was first taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries, police said. Both Shannon and Johnson had seat belts on.

The car was traveling northwest in the 500 block of the road when Shannon lost control of the vehicle, Oberer said. The wreck happened at about 2:30 a.m. near North Tryon Street and UNC Charlotte.

The crash is under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Oberer at 704-432-2169.
