Outage causes spill at McDowell Creek treatment plant

Nearly 3,000 gallons of mostly treated sewage spilled from the McDowell Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant off Neck Road in Huntersville on Saturday, said Cam Coley of Charlotte Water, formerly known as the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department.

The spill was caused by a brief power outage to part of the plant’s UV disinfection system, Coley said.

The plant treats 4.5 million to 5 million gallons of wastewater each day, Coley said.
