Newton announces candidacy for N.C. attorney general

E.S. “Buck” Newton III announced Monday that he is a candidate for North Carolina Attorney General.

Newton. 46, serves in the N.C. Senate, representing Johnston, Nash and Wilson counties. A Republican, he was elected in 2010 after defeating five-term Democratic incumbent A.B. Swindell.

Newton has chaired judiciary committees in the N.C. Senate since being elected in 2010. Currently, he chairs the Judiciary I Committee and the Appropriations Committee on Justice and Public Safety.

A native of Wilson, Newton graduated from Hunt High School, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Appalachian State University, and graduated from Campbell University School of Law.

Newton has practiced law at his firm, Newton and Lee, in Wilson for 16 years.
