Police identify man struck and killed by train

Police have identified the man who was struck and killed by a train Friday in uptown Charlotte.

Edward Roy Weeks, 46, of Charlotte, died when he was struck by a northbound Norfolk Southern train pulling 39 freight cars.

The train engineer sounded the train’s horn when he saw the man about 5 p.m. near Smith Street at Eighth Street, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Weeks got up, gathered his belongings and started walking on the tracks with his back to the train when he was struck and killed, police said. Medic pronounced him dead at the scene.
