SUV strikes person in wheelchair near uptown Tuesday

A person in a wheelchair was struck by an SUV just outside uptown Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon.

Paramedics said one person was taken to nearby Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The collision happened around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Charlottetowne and Kenilworth Avenues, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Officer Keith Trietley.

The crash is under investigation. Police haven’t said what led to the collision or identified the people involved.

At the scene, a dark-colored SUV could be seen on top of a mangled electric wheelchair. The crash was blocking one lane of traffic, which was backed up for half a mile on inbound Kenilworth Avenue.
