What kind of weather can Charlotte region expect New Year’s Eve? Here’s the latest

The Charlotte region will get a lot of rain this weekend — mostly on Sunday — followed by a big drop in temperatures just in time for New Year’s Eve.

The National Weather Service says the rain will start moving in Saturday night and build through the day Sunday to a 60 percent chance.

It rises to a 90 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night, and the rain will likely stick around until 9 a.m. Monday, forecasters say.

A wet tough morning commute should be expected.

Flooding will be also be a possibility for some areas, most likely between 7 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday, NWS forecasters say.

An inch of rain may fall Saturday into Sunday, and an additional 1.5 inches could fall overnight Sunday, forecasters says.

The rain is part of an advancing cold front that will bring dry and cooler weather in time for New Year’s Eve, the National Weather Service says.

Lows will go from 60 on Sunday night to 35 on New Year’s Eve, the NWS says.

It will be sunny on New Year’s Day, but temperatures will likely top out at 53, with a low of 39 that night, officials say.
