‘United’ remembrance concert marks anniversary of UNC Charlotte campus shooting
One year after the shooting that claimed the lives of two students, UNC Charlotte will hold “United: A Remembrance Concert” to pay tribute to the victims.
On April 30, the last day of class, a 22-year-old entered a UNC Charlotte classroom, pulled out a pistol and fired 17 shots, authorities have said. Reed Parlier, 19, of Midland and 21 year-old Riley Howell of Waynesville were killed and four students were injured. Former student Trystan Andrew Terrell was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison.
The upcoming remembrance concert will feature the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and performances from UNC Charlotte students. A video will also remember the victims and the responses of the Charlotte community.
“While nothing can be done to erase the memories and feelings of that day, it is my hope that this exhibition of song, dance and art will serve as a meaningful tribute to Reed Parlier, Riley Howell and all those who were affected ...
“I also hope this reflective showcase of talented artists and students will be a reminder of the enduring strength and spirit that exists in our Niner Nation community,” said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip Dubois in a statement Monday.
The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Belk Theater at the Blumenthal Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 30. Tickets, which are available on the Blumenthal website, are $25 for the public and $10 for UNC Charlotte students, plus taxes and fees. All proceeds will go toward the April 30 Remembrance Fund.
