Driver charged in crash that kills Tabor City man in Concord

A Tabor City man was killed in Concord early Saturday when the car he was riding in ran off the road, struck a tree stump and rolled over, Concord police say.

Devon Hemmingway, 23, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1:35 a.m., said Maj. Wendell Rummage of the Concord Police Department.

Steve Devon Sankar, 24, of Concord, the driver of 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that rolled, had minor injuries and was charged with one count of felony death by motor vehicle, one count of careless and reckless driving and one count of disorderly conduct, Rummage said.

Sankar was in the Cabarrus County Jail under $250,000 bond. Alcohol and speed contributed to the crash.

The car was traveling southeast on Central Heights Drive and ran off the road just past Kiser Woods Drive. After the car hit the stump, Hemmingway was ejected, Rummage said.

Sankar and Hemmingway weren’t wearing seatbelts, he said.
