Man waved gun at passing cars, then turned toward police, who shot him, NC cops say

Pineville police said they shot a man Saturday morning who waved a gun at passing cars before turning toward officers.

“During the officers’ approach, the man turned towards the officers and displayed actions on what the officers believed to be an imminent threat to their safety and the safety of others,” according to a Pineville Police Department news release late Saturday afternoon. “Two Pineville officers fired their service weapons, striking the man.”

Police are not disclosing what actions the man displayed that caused them to believe their lives were at risk.

A 911 caller alerted police to the man waving the gun at cars as he walked along North Polk Street about 10 a.m., according to police.

“Our Pineville officers immediately responded and approached the man to investigate,” police said in the release.

Officers immediately gave medical aid to the man, who was then taken to a hospital by Medic. Police have not said what aid they gave to the man, how many police bullets hit him and what condition he was in.

Police said they found a handgun at the scene in the 900 block of the street.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave per standard procedure, according to the news release.

Police said they were not releasing the officers’ names “at this time” or the name of the man they shot.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the shooting, police said.
