‘Reckless walking.’ Officer finds 2 horses on road. What he did next got some laughs.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police received a call that two members of the community were at large earlier this week — specifically, two horses.

Officer Jay Clark in the North Division drove up to the four-legged fugitives walking in the 7100 block of Pleasant Grove Road in Charlotte on Thursday night, according to CMPD.

The officer spotted the “subjects:” One was dark with white spots and the other was tan. Both appeared undisturbed by the flashing blue lights behind them.

Clark gave his professional assessment of the situation, which was captured on video from his car then posted on CMPD’s Instagram page.

“Currently at a high-speed police chase, we got two horses over here, traveling left of center into oncoming traffic at a high rate of speed,” he’s heard saying on the video, as if talking into his radio.

“Right now we got fleeing to elude, reckless walking ... I’m sure that’s at least a citation somewhere.”

The officer spotted the horses around 10 p.m., CMPD officials said. The road, a two-lane highway outside the city, near Mountain Island, was clear of cars and the horses were walking in the lanes of travel. The short video shows Clark driving slowly behind and beside the horses.

Then the video cuts to the horses standing in front of a driveway gate. One leans down to smell the ground.

“Our horses have hit a dead end. They know their time is up,” Clark said. “The police is here!”

The caption of the Instagram post said that the officer read “the perpetrators their rights,” which included the right to remain silent and the right to carrots.

“Anything you ‘neigh’ can and will be used against you in a court of law,” the post quips.

On Friday morning, authorities assured the public that Clark along with the Animal Care and Control Unit were able to wrangle the two horses back into their enclosure.

“No horses were harmed,” the CMPD post said.
