Man accused of killing Scott Brooks also charged in deaths of 2 found shot in car
A third man has been charged with murder in the deaths of two 35-year-olds who were found shot in a car along Atando Avenue in January. Terry Connor Jr., 33, had previously been charged with killing the beloved co-owner of Brooks Sandwich House.
Two other men were charged earlier this year in the deaths of Asa Shannon and Siojvon Joseph. Everett Connor, 32, and Steven Staples, 30, were each charged with two counts of first-degree murder, felony breaking and entering, and charges related to robbery and kidnapping, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
Connor was charged Friday with first-degree murder, two counts of kidnapping, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy and first-degree burglary, police records show.
He was already in custody. Connor had been arrested on March 4 and charged with killing Scott Allen Brooks, the co-owner of Brooks’ Sandwich House, a NoDa sandwich and burger joint. Police said in early March that they are still searching for a second suspect. Brooks was shot and killed early in the morning Dec. 9 while opening the restaurant.
Shannon and Joseph were found the morning of Jan. 11 in a car down an embankment along the 1400 block of Atando Avenue, police said.
Investigators found the couple after someone called 911 that morning to report seeing the vehicle, according to officials.
“I don’t know what they need, but I’m coming up Atando and I see a car down there in the embankment … I can’t walk down there to see what’s going on,” the caller said on the 911 call.
The caller said it was dark out, but a “bright light at the bottom of the hill” could be seen.
According to Observer news partner WBTV, police found the two dead, each with a gunshot wound to the head, and .40-caliber discharged cartridge casings inside the vehicle.
WBTV reported that an affidavit said the home where Joseph’s and Shannon’s cellphones were last pinged was searched after their killing. The document also said the front door was unlocked, the home looked ransacked and had blood in several rooms, and the couple’s cellphones were found in the front yard.
According to an obituary, Joseph was a Charlotte native and worked at an assisted living facility as a certified nursing assistant.
“Besides the abounding joy she gained from spending quality time with family and friends, she enjoyed traveling, laughing, being a jokester, working and giving to others.”
