Police escort helps Easter Bunny follow coronavirus social distancing near Charlotte

While communities nationwide and around the region canceled Easter Bunny appearances and festivities due to the coronavirus pandemic, one Lake Norman town found a way for children to safely see Peter Cottontail.

The Easter Bunny is following the COVID-19 social distancing recommendations of public health officials on its three-day tour of streets in Cornelius.

Escorted by Cornelius Police officers, this tall-as-a-human Easter Bunny started waving to children from a car Tuesday morning.

Town officials are inviting residents to step outside and wave back.

The tour continues 9 a.m. -1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

The Easter Bunny visited the east side of town Tuesday and plans to appear on the northern end of the town’s west side Wednesday and the southern end of the west side on Thursday.

Because of the pandemic, the Easter Bunny is not stopping for pictures, town officials said.

To help prevent spread of the virus, the town canceled its annual Morning with the Easter Bunny and Hop Into Spring events.

Making the bunny mobile and offering events online were ways to keep the traditions alive, officials said.
