Mecklenburg Medic officials say a person has died on a construction site in Charlotte where fire crews attempted Sunday morning to help someone who was trapped in a hole in the ground.

Earlier Sunday, Charlotte Fire Department posted on its Twitter account that more than 20 firefighters were on scene for a “confined space rescue.” In photos from the fire department, a crane could be seen positioned over a hole in the ground.

WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, reported early Sunday that someone was “stuck in a hole at a construction site” near the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and French Street.

It’s unclear what type of construction was underway or whether the person who died was a worker on the site. The area is just outside uptown Charlotte, west of Interstate 277.
