These Charlotte road projects are delayed due to COVID-19 impact on NCDOT’s budget

The state Department of Transportation said plunging traffic volumes, and resulting lost revenues from transportation taxes and fees, have caused a budget shortfall of at least $300 million that will delay most road construction projects.

All but about 50 major projects scheduled to start in the next year will be delayed, according to North Carolina DOT.

Projects that will continue to move forward are funded by bonds and federal grants. The delays won’t affect construction projects that are already underway or have awarded a contract.

Seven Mecklenburg County projects worth $113 million will be deleted or delayed from a list that had been scheduled to go to bid in the next 12 months.

Here are the seven road projects delayed in Charlotte:

Work on the intersection of Interstate 485 and N.C. 16.

Turning the shoulders of Interstate 77 into rush-hour travel lanes.

Rail work at Charlotte Gateway Station.

Bridge rehabilitation on the city’s inner loop — Interstate 277 or Brookshire Freeway — from East 10th Street to North Graham Street.

Bridge rehabilitation on Interstate 277 from North Graham Street to north of Johnson Street.

Resurfacing a roadway on Interstate 277 from Interstate 77 to East 10th Street.

Pavement Rehabilitation on Interstate 85 near Brookshire Boulevard.
