Got yard waste? Charlotte starts special pickup Monday, for the first time in a month
Charlotte Solid Waste Services will pickup yard waste starting on Monday — the first time in more than one month since coronavirus precautions led the city to temporarily suspend curbside collection.
Solid Waste Services says to leave the waste out until it’s collected. The first pickups will occur Monday but city officials say it could take weeks for all homes to be serviced.
For the rules on how waste must be left out, view the city’s website.
The one-time pickup comes as many homeowners are clearing debris from the storms that swept across the region Saturday night. Regular weekly pickup is still suspended.
Limbs cut to five feet or less may be placed at the curb. Leaves and grass clippings should be bagged or placed in containers without lids at the curb. Residents may place yard waste at the curb Sunday in advance of the pickup.
Regular pickup has been suspended since March 23 to protect workers. Trash and recycling pickup are on normal schedules, and no other yard waste service is currently scheduled.
In the meantime, county recycling centers can take most yard waste and are open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except Sundays. County residents can dispose of two 32-gallon trash bags for free, but larger loads can incur a fee.
With more residents going to the centers, visitors have faced long lines and rowdy customers, and county officials have said that people should only visit a center if it is essential.
