2nd Black Lives Matter rock defaced at a Charlotte area high school

Students at a Union County high school Saturday planned to repaint a Black Lives Matter spirit rock defaced by vandals.

The rock at Marvin Ridge High in Waxhaw was the second vandalized at a Charlotte area school.

More than 100 students at Ardrey Kell High School in south Charlotte repainted the spirit rock in front of their school Monday to honor George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.

The Ardrey Kell rock was defaced with such sayings as “Blue Lives Matter” and “George Floyd = Home Invader.” The names of those killed by police were crossed out with red paint.

At Marvin Ridge, student Parnikaa Thumu and friends painted the spirit rock to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the black community, Thumu posted in her NextDoor announcement about Saturday’s 5 p.m. planned repainting.

“It’s unknown who took part in this,” Thumu posted of the vandals, “but we move on.”
