1 dead after car flips, bursts into flames on major Charlotte road, police say

One person died in a fiery single-car wreck on inbound Independence Boulevard Wednesday afternoon, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

At 3:30 p.m., inbound Independence from Albemarle Road was down to two lanes, CMPD Lt. Andy Harris said. The lanes were reopened at about 6 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

The car caught fire after flipping on the road, Harris said.

Also Wednesday, a 72-year-old Ohio man died in a wreck on Interstate 85 southbound in Belmont, police said.

Tony Angelona Jr. of Warren, Ohio, failed to slow down before his box truck hit an 18-wheeler just north of N.C. 273 at about 1:45 p.m., according to a Belmont Police Department news release.

This is a developing story.
