The largest running event in NC, a Charlotte tradition, is canceled due to COVID-19
Charlotte’s annual SouthPark Turkey Trot, the largest road running event in North Carolina, has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns and will be virtual only, organizers said late Thursday.
The event has become a family tradition, drawing about 9,000 participants each Thanksgiving Day, beginning and ending at SouthPark mall.
The race, now in its 32nd year, is recognized as among the 30 best Turkey Trots in America, event organizers said.
The event has traditionally helped kick off the holiday season in Charlotte. Families join in a morning run/walk before their Thanksgiving meals at home.
“Without question, COVID-19 continues to challenge our community and nation,” according to a SouthPark Turkey Trot news release.. “With an abundance of caution, we have decided not to gather at SouthPark mall this Thanksgiving.”
Still, participants can keep the tradition alive by registering for this year’s event and walking or running at home.
For the first time, the SouthPark Turkey Trot will partner with Charlotte-based Samaritan’s Feet to provide shoes for underprivileged children in the region.
Half of each corporate partner’s sponsorship will be donated to the non-profit organization, with race organizers hoping to give 500 pairs of shoes to children in the Charlotte area.
Runners can register at CLTTurkeyTrot.com and will receive a T-shirt and medallion while supplies last.
