Sewage spill prompts no swimming advisory for part of Lake Cornelius

A “no swimming” advisory was issued Friday for part of Lake Cornelius, after about 500 gallons of sewage discharged into the lake from the 700 block of Peninsula Drive in Davidson.

The discharge was caused by a blockage in a Charlotte Water sewer line, said Rusty Rozzelle, water quality program manager for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services. The blockage was removed and the discharged stopped, he said.

Water samples will be collected in Lake Cornelius by Storm Water Services staff. Sampling will continue until bacteria levels are within safe levels. Until then, the ban will remain, Rozzelle said.
