Derailed train cars affecting traffic along two roads in northwest Charlotte

A “minor” train derailment in northwest Charlotte has hindered traffic along two roadways Tuesday morning, officials said.

At about 5 a.m., a CSX freight train derailed two railcars in the railroad’s Charlotte yard, company spokeswoman Cindy Schild told the Observer. Both cars remained upright, and there were no leaks or injuries reported, she said.

The Charlotte Department of Transportation called the incident “a minor derailment.”

The derailment is affecting traffic in the area of Hovis and Rozzelles Ferry roads, Schild said. CSX expected to begin rerailing the cars by 11 a.m., she said.

The road is expected to be opened “some time tonight,” Schild said.

“It’s easy enough to get around, except for the curious onlookers checking out the train,” according to a tweet by Total Traffic Radio producer Bob Brandon, known as “Charlotte TrafficGuy.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are on-scene directing traffic, Schild said.
