Charlotte had 96 homicides in 2021. Here’s a map showing where each happened
Charlotte registered 96 homicides in 2021.
That’s down from 117 the year prior, 103 in 2019 and up from 57 in 2018, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police data.
Most of the killings happened in the crescent stretching east to west around uptown. Only a couple happened in the affluent areas south of the center city.
Five happened on West Sugar Creek Road, for instance, and three took place on North Tryon Street, according to an Observer analysis of CMPD data.
A few other notes of interest:
▪ A gun was used in 82 of the killings — or 85%.
▪ 80% of the victims — or 77 of them — were Black. Nine were Hispanic and six were white.
▪ 83% of the victims were male.
▪ October recorded the most homicides — 15 — followed by April with 11.
