CPCC lifts ‘shelter in place’ order as police end search on main campus, school says

Central Piedmont Community College ordered students and staff on its main campus near uptown Charlotte to shelter in place Wednesday afternoon as police searched for a suspect.

The order, issued around 2:20 p.m., was lifted just over an hour later.

Officers spotted a vehicle associated with a person who has outstanding arrest warrants, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told the Observer. They started to search but could not locate the suspect, police said.

There was no indication that the suspect was armed or posed any threat to anyone, police said.

At CMPD’s request, CPCC’s security team issued the shelter-in-place order, school spokesman Jeff Lowrance told the Observer.

Just before 3:30 p.m., police completed its search and advised CPCC to lift the order, he said.

“You may resume normal activities and classes,” CPCC tweeted after lifting the order.

CMPD did not say what charges the suspect was wanted for.
