Everyone has experienced a situation where we’ve dropped our smartphones and prayed before checking to see whether the screen is cracked.

With the increased use of glass in Apple and Samsung devices, smartphones are becoming more fragile with every new release.

A 2019 survey found that Americans drop their phones at least four times a week, and a third of smartphone owners in the U.S. have a crack in their screen.

Unfortunately, a cracked screen could result in serious injuries — or at least interruptions. And if your phone is not under warranty, you could end up paying hundreds of dollars to get it fixed.

How much does it cost to repair a cracked screen?

The cost to repair an iPhone out of warranty at an Apple Store ranges from $129 for an iPhone 5, to $329 for an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Screen repairs for Samsung Galaxy phones that are out of warranty can cost anywhere from $79 to $599, depending on the model.

However, if your phone is protected by either AppleCare+ or Samsung Care+, the cost to repair a screen is just $29. Both warranty plans can be purchased for as little as $10 per month.

Authorized service providers for Apple and Samsung, like Best Buy, may offer cheaper prices.

How dangerous is a cracked phone screen?

A cracked screen can be a fire hazard, especially when dust begins to accumulate in the cracks. The Samsung Health and Safety Warranty Guide advises against using a phone with a cracked screen, as it could cause injury.

Other risks of using a phone with a cracked screen include:

  • Eye strain caused by visual obstruction of the screen

  • Electric shock

  • Exposure to harmful radiation

  • Cutting your fingers on broken glass

  • Further damage to your phone from oils, dust and debris in the cracks

Where in Charlotte to get your phone repaired

Here are some authorized service providers in Charlotte where you can visit to get your phone’s screen repaired:

How long do screen repairs take?

Screen repairs shouldn’t take anymore than two hours if you drop your phone off in-person.

Can you repair your phone’s screen yourself?

Apple and Samsung screen repair kits are available on Amazon and Ebay, but fixing a screen by yourself can be tricky. If you’re not confident in your ability to fix your screen, let a professional handle it.

In November, Apple announced the launch of its Self Service Repair program, which will allow customers who are comfortable with completing their own repairs access to Apple parts and tools. The program is expected to begin early this year.

How to protect your phone screen

The best way to prevent your phone’s screen from cracking is to use a case or screen protector.

Many companies like OtterBox, Urban Armor Gear and Speck make durable cases designed to withstand drops and dings without being overly bulky in your pocket.

PopSockets and other phone grips that can be attached to the back of your device have also become increasingly popular.
