NC firefighters hospitalized after fire engine overturns in crash, officials say
Three firefighters were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after their fire engine went off a road and overturned south of Gastonia near South Carolina Saturday morning, Crowders Mountain Fire Chief Woodrow Thomas said.
The firefighters on Engine 550 were responding to a reported apartment fire on Woodbridge Drive in southern Gaston County when they wrecked at about 11 a.m., Thomas said in a news release.
No other vehicles were involved, according to the chief.
The engine veered off Bud Wilson Road near Woodbeam Lane, Thomas said.
That’s a wooded, rural stretch of southern Gaston County.
Gaston Emergency Medical Services took all three firefighters who were on the engine to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, according to the release.
The State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the wreck, Thomas said.
No other information was available, he said.
On Twitter, a neighboring fire department posted well-wishes for the firefighters.
“Please keep our Brothers and Sisters from Crowders Mtn Fire and Rescue in your thoughts and Prayers as they were involved in a serious accident earlier today,” the Union Road Fire Department posted.
The area was closed to traffic after the wreck, WBTV reported.
