Fire outside Charlotte-area high school prompts early dismissal, official says

Students at Lake Norman High School in Mooresville were dismissed early on Friday after a transformer caught fire on the road that leads to the school, a school district spokeswoman said.

The school is on Doolie Road, off N.C. 150 at the lake.

School administrators dismissed students from 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. after talking with police and Duke Energy officials, according to Boen Nutting, chief of strategic planning and student services for Iredell-Statesville Schools.

Administrators were advised to dismiss school for the day so Duke Energy workers could “safely and properly” repair the transformer, Nutting said in an email.

Workers planned to reinforce the pole before cutting power to the line and to the school, she said.

Lake Norman High has been in the news before for canceling classes early because of an unusual incident.

In September, a skunk caused an evacuation after unleashing its obnoxious, overpowering scent in the school, the Observer reported at the time.

The skunk “sprayed inside the school, and the resulting odor affected the students and staff,” administrators said in a statement.

All students were safe, “but remaining on campus was not an option,” according to the statement.
