Charlotte man dies in I-85 wreck
A Charlotte man died Monday night when the left rear tire on his SUV blew on Interstate 85 northbound, sending the SUV into another vehicle and then into the concrete median barrier, State Highway Patrol Trooper John Burgin said.
Tramaine Walters, who would have turned 27 on Friday, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Burgin said. Walters was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, the trooper said.
The wreck happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. just south of Sugar Creek Road in Charlotte.
When its tire blew, the SUV traveled across two northbound lanes before striking a vehicle driven by Dell A. El Hamri, 47, of Charlotte. El Hamri was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries.
