Newsroom employees of The Charlotte Observer form union, are recognized by McClatchy

Newsroom employees of The Charlotte Observer have formed a union.

The McClatchy Co., which owns The Observer, voluntarily recognized the Charlotte Observer News Guild on Wednesday.

In announcing the recognition, The Observer’s executive editor, Rana L. Cash, said: “Since joining The Charlotte Observer newsroom as executive editor in October, I have been witness to a team of gifted journalists who care deeply about our communities and are committed to transformative journalism that makes a difference.

“Voluntary recognition of the Charlotte Observer News Guild allows us to quickly begin negotiations and ensure our shared steadfast commitment as public servants to our communities remains strong.”

The guild said on its website: “Every day, Observer journalists work to amplify the voices of Charlotte’s residents and hold powerful institutions accountable. During unprecedented times, Observer journalists have risen to any challenge.

“We seek to ensure a firm future for the newspaper. That future must be built on fair and equitable pay, transparency from our leadership and a guarantee of continued opportunities for future generations of Observer journalists.”
